Greeting
Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry opened the department of Operative Dentistry on April 1, 1969 by Professor Sadao Wakumoto followed by Reiichi Okuda and Masashi Komatsu. During this period, they had many excellent dental staff members working for dental caries treatment centering on casting restoration and adhesive dentistry. In the year 2013, I was appointed as the Professor and while continuing the traditions of the past, I am working with the excellent young dental staff members who will lead the future with latest treatment technology and R&D to "Save teeth".
At Tohoku University, university hospital provides high-level medical care, and there is a reputed engineering department that is highly regarded worldwide. In addition, this university has a system to support the start-up of venture companies for R&D which is very active with a futuristic view towards translational research and commercialization. In such an environment, we aim to establish a department that utilize the latest dental technology and in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and School of Medicine we aim to bring out the potential capabilities and innovations of young people for development of novel dental care.
The research in our department focuses on "bone regeneration", "inflammation and endodontics", and "oral and systemic health care". All of these studies are aimed at practical application, and we aim to commercialize this technology to solve the problems in the clinical field of dentistry. In addition, we provide safe and secure dental treatment to patients with intractable diseases who visit Tohoku University Hospital. Tohoku University aims to develop world-class dental care technology.
Regarding patient care for dental caries, metal-free treatment using composite resin, and for root canal and periapical lesions, root canal treatment or periapical surgery using surgical microscope are performed, which is a global standard technology worldwide.We are working on to introduce all kinds of treatment techniques to preserve teeth, including transplantation and re-implantation. We are also introducing regenerative medicine and verifying its effects through clinical research. In addition, we regularly have seminars and hands-on courses held by well-known professors from Japan and overseas to continuously update on current technology and create an environment so that our staff can keep an up to date knowledge.
